We perhaps have to wait a little while longer to find out while the technological advances of sophisticated machines yet plays out either as fulfillment of prophecy or disappointment of yet another scientific cul-de-sac.
We perhaps must better understand the autonomous intelligence of the machine and what that may mean beyond the scope of a now delimited “Turing Test.”
Does a machine generate and convey true sentient understanding, or is this sense only our own projected sense of sentience evoked by the sophistry of the machines cultural linguistic responses.
My limited experience with contemporary AI machines in. generative chats tells me that the machine is a very sophisticated knowledge management device, that actually senses nothing but is enough of a post ELIZA to be convincing enough as a personal conversationalist well informed about many topics of our shared world, except when it makes mistakes, experiences omissions and sometimes has “hallucinations” of fabricated realities.
The situation, beyond promising to liberate humankind of its own ignorance if not mental lassitude, promises an objective, rigorous and logical evaluation of world issues beyond ideological diatribe and superstitions rooted in conspiracy theory and ignorance of critical attitudes or objective reality. In this function, I find the human-machine relationship one of complementary interdependency and symbiosis (hopefully) that might be best described as a kind of dialectic exploration of unknown possibilities and half-known factualities.
So no, the rise of the intelligent machine does not spell the death of beauty or the disappearance of literature or the end of books and traditional literacy. It might mean the burning of more books, and the over-dependence of a chronically addictive humanity to the things these AI machines seem to do best—placating the. ego and making the stupid feel really smart. People will perhaps need to find newer and more interesting ways to express their native intelligence and curiosity and to explore their worlds than just chatting with a personal AI assistant with no true sense of self.
